Travelers flying from Edinburgh Airport can now breeze through security with fewer restrictions, thanks to a major update that’s just landed.
As of July 7, 2025, Edinburgh Airport has officially scrapped the 100ml liquid rule, making it the first airport in Scotland to fully implement this change. This update is part of a £24 million investment in state-of-the-art 3D scanning technology, which is set to revolutionize airport security and make travel a lot smoother for passengers.
What’s New for Hand Luggage?
With the new CT scanners now fully installed, here’s what passengers can expect:
- You can carry liquids up to 2 litres in your hand luggage.
- Laptops, tablets, and liquids can stay inside your bag during security checks.
- No more need for clear plastic bags for your toiletries.
This makes packing hand luggage for a city break or short haul trip from Edinburgh easier than ever.

Enhanced Scanners, Smoother Security
The airport has installed eight new Smiths Detection CT scanners, capable of producing 3D images of your bag’s contents. This cutting-edge technology enhances security while massively reducing queue times.
According to Michael Hering, Head of Security at Edinburgh Airport, 97% of passengers are now getting through security in under 10 minutes.
“We’re seeing a real difference in speed and passenger satisfaction,” says Hering.
Traveling Beyond Edinburgh? Read This First
Although this is great news for those departing from Edinburgh, it’s important to note:
- Many airports worldwide still enforce the 100ml limit, including some in the UK.
- Check the rules for your return journey or connecting flights – procedures may vary.
- Thermos flasks or double-walled containers must be empty, as they can’t be properly scanned.
Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive at Edinburgh Airport, urges travelers to stay informed:
“We’re excited to offer this upgrade, but passengers must check the rules at all legs of their journey.”
